Discovering China through English: Young Scientists Explore Ancient Inventions

This year, our Primary Two students took part in the English Department’s DTS “Discover China” programme, which links English learning with Chinese culture and science inquiry. In this unit, students were introduced to two of ancient China’s Four Great Inventions: gunpowder and the compass, and learned related vocabulary and expressions through stories, videos and class discussions.

A key feature of the programme was the pair of hands-on experiments, “Navigating North” and “Successful Bubbleworks”, where students worked in groups like young scientists. The programme not only enriched students’ understanding of Chinese history and inventions, but also nurtured their curiosity, creativity and diligence in learning. Nice to see that P.2 students experience the joy of learning in a meaningful, cross-curricular way!
